Police have detained 12 individuals from a village in Bareilly district for allegedly offering Namaz inside a vacant house without obtaining the required permission, officials said on Sunday. The action was taken after information was received about prayers being held at the location, raising concerns among local residents.
Officials said a video allegedly showing people offering prayers inside the empty house has surfaced and is being widely circulated on social media. The footage has been taken into account as part of the ongoing inquiry to ascertain the nature and frequency of the gatherings.
SP (South) Anshika Verma said the police acted as a precautionary measure after villagers from Mohammadganj informed authorities that the vacant house was being used as a temporary madrasa for several weeks. She stated that conducting any new religious activity or organising gatherings at a place without prior permission violates the law. She warned that strict action would be taken if such activities are repeated and urged residents to maintain peace and public order.
Police said the 12 detained persons were booked under sections related to breach of peace. They were later produced before a magistrate, who granted them bail. Officials added that efforts are currently underway to trace three other individuals who are absconding in connection with the case.
According to preliminary findings, the vacant house belongs to a person named Hanif and was being used temporarily for offering Friday prayers. When questioned, those present at the site were unable to produce any written permission or valid documents authorising the use of the premises for religious activities, police said.
Authorities also noted that some villagers had objected to the regular conduct of prayers at the house without official approval and subsequently informed the police. Acting on the complaint, the police reached the spot and stopped the gathering to prevent any potential law and order issues.
Officials reiterated that the situation remains under control and said further action, if required, would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation and verification of facts.
