A stage performance in Bihar’s Bhojpur district turned into a medical emergency after a dancer was allegedly forced to swallow coins by members of the audience, leaving her in critical condition and prompting a police investigation into safety lapses at public events.
The incident took place during a local cultural programme in the Chandwa Tola area, where the performer was entertaining a large gathering. Eyewitnesses said that as the performance gained momentum, several spectators climbed onto the stage in excitement, disrupting the event and crowding around the artist.
Amid the chaos, some individuals allegedly pushed coins into the dancer’s mouth — a gesture sometimes associated with celebratory stage performances — but carried out without her consent. Shortly afterward, she began experiencing severe discomfort, and her condition deteriorated rapidly, causing panic among organisers and attendees.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, those present rushed her to Ara Sadar Hospital for emergency treatment. Her husband, Raju Kumar, said that the incident occurred while she was performing and that audience members forcibly placed coins in her mouth, leading to one being swallowed. When her health worsened, she was immediately taken for medical care.
Doctors conducted urgent examinations and successfully removed the coin lodged in her throat. However, hospital authorities said she remains under close medical supervision, with her condition described as serious. Medical teams are continuing tests to check for internal injuries or complications, and further procedures may be required depending on her recovery.
The episode has triggered concern among residents and officials over inadequate crowd control and the vulnerability of performers during public programmes. Witnesses pointed to failures in maintaining stage security, noting that spectators were able to breach barriers and invade the performer’s personal space.
Police have begun an investigation, recording statements from organisers, eyewitnesses and others present at the venue to determine responsibility and assess whether negligence or poor crowd management contributed to the incident. Authorities are also expected to review safety arrangements for future cultural events, amid renewed calls for stricter protocols to protect performers and ensure safer public gatherings.
