Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday warmly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the Knesset, describing the Indian leader not merely as a close friend but as a brother. Expressing deep appreciation for Modi’s visit, Netanyahu said he was profoundly moved by the occasion and highlighted the strong personal bond between them as well as the growing partnership between India and Israel.
Welcoming Modi and his delegation to Jerusalem, Netanyahu referred to him as a prominent global leader and a steadfast supporter of Israel. He emphasised that the relationship between the two nations had strengthened significantly over the years, noting that cooperation across multiple sectors had expanded rapidly since Modi’s historic visit to Israel in 2017. According to Netanyahu, bilateral trade had doubled, cooperation had tripled and mutual understanding between the two countries had grown substantially during this period.
Recalling earlier moments shared during Modi’s previous visit, Netanyahu spoke about how the two leaders had reflected on strengthening ties while meeting along the Mediterranean coast. He remarked that although they had not performed literal miracles, the transformation in India–Israel relations since then could be described as remarkable progress driven by shared goals and collaboration.
In a lighter moment, Netanyahu referred to Modi’s widely recognised warm embrace, popularly described as the “Modi hug,” saying it symbolised genuine friendship rather than diplomatic formality. He noted that their embrace at the airport earlier in the day reflected the closeness between the two leaders and represented the broader warmth and trust that characterise relations between the peoples of India and Israel.
Netanyahu also praised India’s historical relationship with Jewish communities, stating that India stood out as a civilisation where Jews were welcomed and never subjected to state persecution. He expressed gratitude for this legacy, especially at a time when antisemitism continues to rise in different parts of the world.
Prime Minister Modi received a standing ovation from members of the Israeli Parliament and was greeted with chants in his honour. During his address, he reaffirmed India’s strong ties with Israel and reiterated New Delhi’s firm stance against terrorism, stressing that no cause could ever justify violence against civilians. He also voiced support for efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region, including initiatives focused on stability and long-term resolution of conflicts.
