Ishan Kishan sparked concern during India’s practice on Wednesday, February 11, after being hit on his left leg by a sharp yorker from Jasprit Bumrah. The wicketkeeper-batter grimaced in pain and collapsed to the ground, prompting the team physio to rush in for immediate treatment.
Fortunately for India, Kishan soon recovered, stood up, and briefly resumed batting before leaving the nets a few minutes later. The team will be eager to have him fully fit for Thursday’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia, particularly with doubts lingering over Abhishek Sharma’s availability.
Abhishek, who had been hospitalised in Delhi with a stomach ailment, was discharged on Wednesday but missed training on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Tilak Varma indicated that the opener’s condition has improved, though a final decision on his participation will be made on matchday. Given India’s upcoming high-profile clash against Pakistan in Colombo, the management is unlikely to rush him back prematurely.
Reports suggest Abhishek was already unwell during India’s opener against the USA in Mumbai, where he was dismissed for a duck and did not field during the chase.
If Kishan is cleared to play, India are expected to pair him with Sanju Samson at the top of the order against Namibia. Samson, who was omitted from the USA match in favour of Kishan, has been training in Delhi as he looks to regain form after a disappointing run, including a tough series against New Zealand.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate voiced confidence in Samson, praising his positive mindset and work ethic despite the selection setback. He emphasised that competition for spots is natural and that Samson remains an important member of the squad.
India currently sit second in the Group A standings, behind Pakistan. A victory over Namibia would propel them to the top of the table. The two sides have met only once in T20 internationals, with India securing a comfortable nine-wicket win during the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai.
