A shocking crime in Bhopal has left residents stunned after a man previously convicted of murdering his three sons allegedly killed a woman who had provided him shelter before dying by suicide under a moving train. The accused, identified as Pritam Kushwaha, had spent 18 years in prison for the earlier murders and had been living with the victim following his release last year.
The victim, 50-year-old Durga, was found stabbed to death inside an under-construction house in the Gautam Nagar area. According to police, Kushwaha, who was both a relative and a fellow disciple (gurubhai), had been staying at her residence for nearly a year after being socially ostracised in his native village of Tendukheda following his release from jail. Investigators said he allegedly took Durga to the under-construction property on the pretext of cleaning work before attacking her with a sharp weapon, inflicting multiple stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.
Police believe tensions had been building between the two for several months, as Durga had reportedly been urging Kushwaha to vacate her house for nearly six months. Officials suspect this dispute may have triggered the fatal attack. Authorities are also examining the fact that Kushwaha had sold his vegetable cart — his primary source of livelihood — just two days before the incident, a development now considered relevant to the investigation.
Station in-charge Mahendra Singh Thakur confirmed that Kushwaha had earlier been convicted for killing his three sons with an axe and had completed his prison sentence before returning to society. After the murder, the accused fled the scene and later died by suicide by jumping in front of a train near the Nishatpura area, bringing the violent episode to a grim end.
Police have initiated a detailed investigation to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the murder and subsequent suicide. The incident has deeply shaken the local community, highlighting a disturbing chain of violence marked by betrayal, unresolved personal conflict, and a tragic repeat of a violent past.
