Two days prior to the elections in Bangladesh, a Hindu merchant was fatally stabbed in his store

A Hindu businessman was stabbed to death inside his shop in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district late on Monday night, just days before the country’s elections, police officials said.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Sushen Chandra Sarkar, a rice trader and the owner of “Messrs Bhai Bhai Enterprise,” located at the Bogar Bazar intersection in Trishal upazila. He was a resident of Southkanda village in the same locality.

According to police, the attack occurred at around 11 pm when Sarkar was alone inside his shop. Unidentified assailants allegedly entered the premises and attacked him with sharp weapons. After killing him, they reportedly pulled down the shop’s shutter, left his body inside, and fled the scene.

Confirming the incident, Trishal Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Firoz Hossain said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The motive for the killing has not yet been determined, and officials said investigators are examining all possible angles.

The murder comes amid a series of violent incidents in Bangladesh over recent months, including mob attacks that have targeted minorities following the death of anti-India radical student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was lynched by a mob and later set on fire over allegations of blasphemy.

In another incident days later, Amrit Mondal, whom police described as a hardened criminal, was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district on allegations of extortion.

Violence has continued to be reported across the country. Last year, Hindu trader Liton Chandra Das was killed in a mob attack in Kaliganj, while in a separate case, fuel station employee Ripon Saha was crushed to death while attempting to stop a vehicle from fleeing a petrol pump without paying.
