Abhishek Sharma had a night to forget during India’s must-win Super 8 clash against West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1. The left-handed batter’s difficult run in the tournament continued, capping what has largely been an underwhelming campaign. He started with three successive ducks and, aside from a single half-century against Zimbabwe, has struggled to find rhythm.
In the virtual quarterfinal against West Indies, Abhishek looked out of touch. He dropped two important catches that proved expensive and then failed to deliver with the bat. His laboured 10 off 12 balls came to an end when left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein dismissed him, completing a disappointing performance under the lights.
After India chose to bowl first, Abhishek had an early chance to make an impact in the field but failed to grab it. Roston Chase, opening in international cricket for the first time, miscued a slower delivery from Jasprit Bumrah towards extra cover. Abhishek moved back, got into position and managed to get both hands to the ball, but spilled the straightforward catch. Bumrah remained composed, showing little reaction.
The missed opportunity hurt India as Chase took advantage of the reprieve, going on to score a quickfire 40 off 25 balls, including five boundaries and a six.
Abhishek’s troubles in the field continued later when he dropped another catch, this time giving Rovman Powell a lifeline off Arshdeep Singh. Charging in from deep mid-wicket, he dived forward but failed to hold on as the ball came loose on impact with the ground.
His struggles extended to his batting. From the outset, he looked uncomfortable against Hosein’s variations in pace and length. Although he managed to slice a wide delivery over extra cover for a boundary, he was unable to build momentum and frequently failed to clear the infield.
Facing Matthew Forde’s pace, he appeared even more unsettled. After pulling a short ball for four, he was struck on the helmet by a sharp delivery while attempting a similar shot, prompting a brief concussion check.
With pressure mounting, Abhishek attempted an ambitious pull off a back-of-a-length ball from Hosein in the third over but mistimed it, offering a simple catch to Shimron Hetmyer at deep square leg, bringing an end to another frustrating outing.
