AIADMK supports Vijay and charges DMK with attempting to damage TVK chief's reputation

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape witnessed renewed confrontation after the AIADMK publicly backed actor-turned-politician Vijay, alleging that the ruling DMK was attempting to undermine his credibility as he moves toward his first electoral contest. The exchange has intensified political tensions in the state as new entrants begin to reshape pre-election narratives.

Support for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader came after a legal petition linked to Vijay’s divorce proceedings resurfaced in public discussion, prompting reactions across party lines. The development quickly evolved into a political flashpoint, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling establishment of exploiting personal matters for electoral advantage.

AIADMK leader Sellur Raju alleged that the controversy was being deliberately amplified to weaken Vijay’s expanding political appeal. He claimed the issue was being circulated with the intention of damaging the actor’s public image and discouraging his growing support base. According to him, the ruling party was attempting to influence public perception ahead of elections by spotlighting personal issues unrelated to governance or policy.

Meanwhile, Union Minister L Murugan questioned the extent of Vijay’s political influence, stating that the actor would now be tested in the electoral arena. He noted that public enthusiasm surrounding film personalities does not automatically translate into votes and emphasised that electoral credibility is determined by political organisation and voter trust rather than celebrity status.

Murugan also referenced earlier instances of film stars entering politics, citing examples such as Chiranjeevi and Vijayakanth, and argued that initial public excitement did not always convert into sustained political success. He added that the era when cinema popularity alone could deliver electoral victories had largely passed, recalling the unique political legacy of M. G. Ramachandran in Tamil Nadu.

The debate reflects the broader churn in Tamil Nadu politics as Vijay’s entry and the emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam introduce a new variable into an arena traditionally dominated by established Dravidian parties. With elections approaching, political parties are positioning themselves around narratives of credibility, governance, and influence, while closely watching how Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics unfolds.
