Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major Delhi Metro expansions and laid the foundation stone for three additional corridors under Phase V(A) of the metro project, significantly enhancing the capital’s urban transport network. The newly opened sections include the 12.3-km Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur stretch of the Pink Line and the 9.9-km Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park extension of the Magenta Line. With the completion of the entire Pink Line loop, it has now become India’s first fully operational ring metro corridor. Passenger services on the new sections commenced at 3 pm.
The Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur section consists of nine elevated stations and is expected to improve connectivity between North and Northeast Delhi. The stations on this stretch are Majlis Park, Burari, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Soorghat, Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, and Maujpur-Babarpur. The corridor includes major engineering features such as a newly built bridge over the Yamuna River and a double-decker viaduct designed to carry both a metro line and a road flyover simultaneously.
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park elevated extension of the Magenta Line, which will enhance connectivity for several residential and commercial areas. The extension links localities including Madhuban Chowk, Uttar Pitampura–Prashant Vihar, Haiderpur Badli Mor, and Bhalaswa, and comprises seven stations. Portions of this corridor rise to a height of approximately 28.36 metres, making it among the tallest elevated stretches in the Delhi Metro network. With this addition, the total length of the Magenta Line expands to nearly 49 kilometres. At present, the Botanical Garden–Krishna Park Extension section of the corridor remains operational.
These newly opened Pink and Magenta Line stretches are part of broader infrastructure projects valued at around ₹33,500 crore. The expansions are expected to improve last-mile connectivity, ease congestion, and reduce travel time for thousands of commuters across the national capital.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for three new metro corridors under Phase V(A) of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation expansion plan. These include the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg–Indraprastha corridor, the Aerocity–Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1 corridor, and the Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj corridor.
The 9.9-km Ramakrishna Ashram Marg–Indraprastha corridor, also referred to as the Central Vista corridor, will be constructed underground and is expected to significantly improve access to prominent government and cultural landmarks in central Delhi, including India Gate, Central Secretariat, and Bharat Mandapam.
The Aerocity–Terminal 1 extension will be a 2.26-km underground link featuring a new station that connects the Golden Line to the domestic terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport. Meanwhile, the 3.9-km Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj corridor will be an elevated route connecting parts of South Delhi and improving airport access for commuters travelling from Faridabad and Ballabhgarh through the existing Violet Line.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the metro expansion represents a major step toward building a faster, smoother, and more environmentally sustainable public transport system. She noted that improved metro connectivity would reduce reliance on private vehicles, ease road congestion, and contribute to lowering pollution levels in the capital.
Beyond metro expansion, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development initiatives in Delhi valued at approximately ₹33,500 crore. This included redevelopment works worth around ₹15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation programme.
The redevelopment projects at Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, and Sriniwaspuri will provide more than 9,350 modern residential units for government employees, along with nearly 48 lakh square feet of new office space. Prior to the main event, the Prime Minister visited the newly constructed GPRA Type-5 residential quarters in Sarojini Nagar and handed over keys to women beneficiaries.
Overall, the metro inaugurations and associated infrastructure projects are aimed at strengthening Delhi’s urban framework, modernizing public transport, and enhancing living and working conditions in the national capital.
