Speaking to the president of Iran, PM Modi emphasizes the necessity of safe shipping lines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he extended greetings on the occasions of Eid and Nowruz while also addressing the ongoing conflict in the region.

During the call, Modi expressed concern over attacks on critical infrastructure, stating that such actions pose a serious threat to regional stability and have wider implications for global supply chains. He emphasised that disruptions in key sectors, especially energy and transport, can have far-reaching economic consequences beyond the immediate conflict zone.

A major focus of the discussion was maritime security. Modi reiterated the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and keeping international shipping routes open and secure. This is particularly significant given the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass. Ongoing tensions have already led to restricted movement of vessels, affecting global trade flows.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged Iran’s cooperation in ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in the country. The welfare of Indian citizens in the region remains a key concern as the conflict continues.

This marks the second conversation between the two leaders since hostilities began on February 28. Earlier discussions also highlighted India’s consistent stance that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy rather than escalation.

India has maintained active engagement with multiple countries involved in or affected by the crisis, balancing its diplomatic approach while focusing on safeguarding its strategic interests, including energy security and the safety of maritime routes.
