A doctor secretly records a coworker and demands a ransom of Rs 25 lakh; 3,000 recordings are confiscated

A serious case of privacy violation and cyber extortion has emerged in Rajkot, where a doctor has been accused of secretly recording colleagues and using the footage for blackmail over a prolonged period.

The accused, Dr. Kamal Nandha, allegedly installed a hidden camera inside a bulb holder in the delivery room of a clinic on Sadhu Vaswani Road. The device was designed to activate whenever the light was switched on, recording footage onto a memory card. Investigators believe this operation had been ongoing since 2023, with the accused periodically retrieving and replacing storage cards to collect recordings without detection.

Police have recovered more than 3,000 video clips, indicating a sustained pattern of covert surveillance. The footage reportedly captured private moments involving doctors working at the clinic, including the complainant and a female colleague.

According to the complaint, the accused shared some of these recordings with a network of intermediaries and individuals posing as journalists. The material was then used to threaten the victim with public exposure unless a payment of Rs 25 lakh was made. So far, around Rs 50,000 is believed to have been extorted.

Investigators have linked the motive to personal reasons, stating that the accused acted out of unrequited feelings toward a female doctor who was reportedly in a relationship with the complainant. The alleged misuse of private recordings was intended to exert pressure and gain leverage.

A total of 12 individuals have been named in the case, facing charges including extortion, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, and violations under the Information Technology Act. Police are continuing their investigation, focusing on digital evidence and identifying others involved in distributing or exploiting the footage.

The case has raised significant concerns about the misuse of surveillance technology in sensitive environments such as medical facilities, highlighting the need for stricter internal security and privacy safeguards.
