A van and a cement mixer collided on a Maharashtra bridge, killing eleven people

A fatal road accident in Maharashtra’s Thane district claimed the lives of eleven people and left two others critically injured after a van collided head-on with a cement mixer on a bridge. The incident has raised concerns over road safety and the impact of high-speed collisions on narrow stretches like bridges.

The accident took place around 10:45 am on the Raita bridge in the Murbad area. The van, which was travelling from Kalyan towards Murbad, crashed into a cement mixer approaching from the opposite direction. The force of the collision was intense, causing extensive damage to both vehicles and leaving passengers with little chance of survival.

Officials confirmed that the van was carrying several occupants at the time of the crash. Among the deceased were eight men and three women. Two individuals who survived the collision sustained serious injuries and were immediately transported to a hospital in Ulhasnagar, where they remain in critical condition.

Authorities have so far identified six of the victims, while efforts are ongoing to confirm the identities of the remaining deceased. The scale of the damage and the severity of the impact have made identification and recovery operations more challenging.

The accident also led to significant disruption on the Kalyan–Ahilyanagar route, with traffic halted for several hours before normal movement could be restored. Local residents, along with police teams, played a key role in carrying out rescue operations and clearing the site.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the collision, including factors such as speed, road conditions, and possible negligence.
