After killing the daughter of an IRS officer, the killer was referred to as a cousin in Maine

In a significant development in the Delhi rape and murder case, investigators have identified the person Rahul Meena was speaking to while fleeing the scene. CCTV footage showed him continuously on a phone call as he exited the residence in Delhi, and his family later confirmed that he had contacted his cousin Trilok during that time.

According to statements gathered during the investigation, Rahul allegedly told his cousin that he had committed a serious crime in Delhi and expected to be caught by the police soon. In the same conversation, he reportedly denied committing the earlier assault in Alwar, claiming he had only gone there to retrieve his mobile phone and had not harmed anyone, a claim that contradicts the allegations registered in that case.

Police have established that the accused is linked to two separate incidents that occurred within a span of roughly 12 hours across two states. On Tuesday night, he allegedly entered a neighbour’s home in Alwar and sexually assaulted a woman, threatening her and her family afterwards. Within hours, he travelled nearly 200 kilometres to Delhi, where he carried out the second crime at the residence of his former employer.

Investigators say he used his familiarity with the house layout to gain access to the property in Delhi. Once inside, he allegedly attacked the victim in her study area, inflicted severe injuries, and later strangled her. Evidence suggests that the assault was followed by attempts to access valuables in the house, after which he fled the scene using a change of clothes to avoid detection.

The postmortem conducted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed strangulation as the cause of death, along with multiple injuries indicating a violent struggle. Forensic samples have been collected, and further analysis is underway to determine additional details of the assault.

The investigation gained momentum through extensive CCTV tracking, which helped reconstruct his movements. Police traced an auto-rickshaw he boarded after leaving the scene, and the driver provided crucial information that led officers to a hotel in Dwarka, where the accused had checked in. From there, authorities recovered cash and jewellery believed to have been stolen from the victim’s residence.

Officials have indicated that financial factors may have played a role in the crimes. The accused was reportedly involved in online betting activities and had accumulated debts, borrowing money from multiple individuals. Investigators are now examining these financial links to understand whether they contributed to his actions.

Rahul had previously worked as a domestic help at the victim’s home but was dismissed due to concerns related to his betting habits and financial misconduct. Police sources describe him as having a history of aggressive behaviour, and during questioning, he reportedly showed little remorse while attempting to justify his actions.

The case continues to expand as investigators analyse call records, financial transactions, and movement patterns to build a comprehensive understanding of the sequence of events and underlying motives.
