The government is taking steps to reduce LPG hysteria, including daily briefings and enforcement against black marketing

The central government has decided to take strict action against rumours and misinformation related to the availability of LPG cylinders and other petroleum products, amid concerns arising from the ongoing global energy crisis linked to the Iran conflict.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has written to Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories, directing them to conduct daily press briefings and ensure that accurate, timely information is shared through social and electronic media platforms. The aim is to counter misleading claims and prevent confusion among the public.

At present, only 17 states and UTs—including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala—are holding such briefings in some capacity. The ministry has urged wider participation to improve communication nationwide.

Officials noted that false reports about LPG shortages and price hikes have been circulating, particularly on social media. These rumours have created unnecessary panic, leading to increased pressure on the supply chain, as people rush to stock up on cylinders and other fuels.

To address this, states have also been instructed to take strict action against black marketing, hoarding, and other illegal practices that may disrupt supply.

This initiative by the government led by Narendra Modi is intended to reassure citizens that there is no shortage of LPG and that supplies remain stable across the country.
