A suspected case of honour killing has been reported from Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh, where three brothers have been arrested for allegedly murdering their 19-year-old sister after discovering her with her partner. The incident took place on Thursday night and has raised serious concerns due to the brutality of the act and the deliberate attempt to cover it up.
According to police, the incident began when one of the brothers returned home and found his sister with her partner, identified as Ravi Kumar Gupta. He then called his two brothers, and together they locked the couple inside a room. The accused allegedly attacked both of them with iron rods. The young woman died on the spot due to the injuries, while Gupta was critically hurt but managed to escape from the house.
Despite being injured, Gupta fled, but the brothers reportedly chased him and assaulted him again near his home, leaving him in a severely injured condition. He was later admitted to a hospital, where he informed his family about the entire incident, which eventually led to the case being reported to the police.
After committing the crime, the accused allegedly attempted to destroy all evidence. The following morning, they transported the victim’s body in a pickup vehicle to Sisai Ghat in Gorakhpur, where they cremated it. After returning home, they cleaned the bloodstains and burned their clothes to eliminate any trace of the crime.
The case came to light after Gupta’s family filed a complaint based on his statement. Acting swiftly, the police arrested all three brothers on Saturday. They are currently in custody and are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. Legal proceedings will follow based on the findings of the investigation. The case highlights the continued presence of honour-based violence and the need for strict enforcement of the law to prevent such incidents.
