Watch: Following a fire at a BYD parking garage, thick smoke fills Shenzhen, China

A fire broke out at a parking garage linked to BYD in Shenzhen on Tuesday morning, drawing a rapid response from local fire and rescue authorities. The incident occurred in an industrial park in the Pingshan district, where the company’s global headquarters are located. According to the company, the facility was being used to park test and scrapped vehicles.

Visuals from the scene showed thick black smoke rising into the sky and flames spreading across a large section of the multi-storey structure. Fire trucks and police units were deployed, and the blaze was eventually brought under control. BYD confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and stated that no casualties were reported.

The incident has also drawn attention to the nature of electric vehicle fires. Experts note that lithium-ion battery fires behave differently from conventional vehicle fires, often burning at higher temperatures, lasting longer, and carrying the risk of reignition even after being put out. This makes such incidents more complex to manage, especially in enclosed spaces like parking structures.

Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire, and an investigation is expected to determine how the blaze started.
