With the assistance of her lover, an Odisha woman kills her uncle after suspecting an involvement in the death of her father

According to the Odisha Police, nine individuals, including the victim’s niece, her brother, and her boyfriend, have been taken into custody for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a businessman from Ganjam district in connection with a long-standing property dispute. The case highlights how internal financial conflicts within a family escalated into a carefully planned and brutal killing.

What began as a disagreement over money and inheritance eventually turned into a shocking act of violence in Odisha’s Ganjam district, where a local real estate businessman was abducted, severely tortured, and ultimately killed. Investigators believe the crime was not random but the result of a deliberate conspiracy involving close family members, including his niece, along with her brother and romantic partner.

The victim, identified as Sudhir Patra, went missing on the evening of April 15 while he was returning home after attending a volleyball match on the outskirts of Berhampur. When he failed to reach home and could not be contacted, his worried family members approached the police and filed a missing person complaint, prompting an initial search operation.

After nearly a week of uncertainty and investigation, authorities discovered a decomposed body in a forested region near Sorada. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, identification was difficult, and the family had to rely primarily on the victim’s clothing and personal belongings to confirm that the body was indeed that of Sudhir Patra.

As the investigation progressed, police uncovered details suggesting that the murder had been orchestrated by members of Sudhir’s own family. His niece, Nivedita Patra, is believed to have played a central role in planning the crime, along with her boyfriend Kalu Pradhan and her brother Tushar Patra. Officials further revealed that the conspiracy extended beyond the immediate family, involving hired criminals brought in from outside the state to execute the plan.

According to the Superintendent of Police in Ganjam, the motive behind the crime appears to be rooted in a combination of financial disagreements and deep personal suspicions. Following the death of Nivedita’s father, who was also a well-known businessman, tensions reportedly intensified within the family regarding the division of property and inheritance. Authorities stated that Nivedita and her brother felt they had been unfairly excluded or disadvantaged in financial dealings managed by Sudhir Patra.

In addition to financial grievances, investigators indicated that Nivedita allegedly harbored suspicions that her uncle might have been involved in occult practices, which she believed were linked to her father’s death. These suspicions, combined with existing disputes over property, are said to have further fueled resentment and contributed to the planning of the crime.

Police reports suggest that the accused initially intended to abduct Sudhir Patra for ransom, hoping to extort money from his family. On April 15, the group intercepted him and forcibly placed him inside a Bolero vehicle. However, when the vehicle developed a technical issue during the operation, they transferred him to another car and continued their journey to a more isolated location.

The victim was eventually taken to a secluded area near a temple in the Baliguda region. Investigators revealed that the accused spent several hours there, during which they reportedly consumed alcohol and food before launching a violent assault on Sudhir using sticks and iron rods. During this time, ransom calls were also made to his family in an attempt to extract money.

The assault continued into the early hours of April 16 and ultimately resulted in Sudhir Patra’s death. After realizing that he had died, the accused disposed of his body along an unpaved stretch near the Baliguda–Koraput route. They then fled the scene and attempted to escape towards Chhattisgarh to avoid being caught.

During their escape, the group reportedly encountered several difficulties, including multiple vehicle breakdowns, which forced them to briefly seek assistance from locals while simultaneously trying to remain undetected by law enforcement agencies.

Police confirmed that, so far, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. These include both family members directly involved in the conspiracy and hired accomplices who assisted in carrying out the crime. Authorities indicated that further arrests could still be made as the investigation continues to unfold.

Officials also stated that the case was successfully solved with the help of coordinated efforts between local intelligence units and police teams from multiple states, including Gujarat, as some of the accused had fled outside Odisha after committing the crime.

At present, the arrested individuals are being interrogated as investigators work to piece together the complete sequence of events, establish individual roles in the conspiracy, and gather additional evidence to strengthen the case before it proceeds further in the legal system.
