A seven-year-old child from Ranchi achieves a world record by swimming the Palk Strait in ten hours

A remarkable feat of endurance and determination has been achieved by a seven-year-old swimmer from Ranchi, who has become the youngest person to successfully swim across the Palk Strait. Ishank Singh completed the demanding 29-kilometre stretch between Talaimannar and Dhanushkodi in 9 hours and 50 minutes, navigating one of the most challenging open-water routes in the region.

The Palk Strait is known for its unpredictable conditions, including strong sea currents, fluctuating tides, and sudden weather changes, all of which make long-distance swimming particularly difficult even for experienced athletes. Despite these obstacles, Ishank began his swim at around 4 am and maintained steady progress through the day, ultimately reaching the Indian coast at Arichalmunai near Rameswaram by 1:50 pm. His successful crossing demonstrates not only physical endurance but also mental resilience at an exceptionally young age.

Upon reaching the shore, Ishank was received with appreciation and encouragement from officials and supporters present at the site. His achievement has drawn widespread recognition, including praise from Hemant Soren, who described the young swimmer as an extraordinary talent and highlighted his discipline and commitment. The accomplishment has been seen as a moment of pride not only for Jharkhand but for the country as a whole.

Ishank’s record surpasses that of Jay Jashwanth, who previously held the distinction after completing the same route in 10 hours and 30 minutes at the age of 10 in 2019. By achieving the crossing at just seven years old, Ishank has set a new benchmark in endurance swimming, particularly in open-sea conditions that are widely regarded as highly demanding.

The feat underscores the growing presence of young athletes in endurance sports and highlights the level of preparation, training, and support required to accomplish such a physically and mentally taxing challenge.
