A video captures the moments before the Jabalpur cruise tragedy: severe weather, no life jacket

A tragic boating accident at the Bargi Dam has raised serious concerns over safety compliance after a cruise vessel capsized during a sudden storm, resulting in nine deaths. A video recorded just minutes before the incident shows tourists enjoying what appeared to be pleasant weather conditions, with strong breezes and calm surroundings, unaware of the rapidly worsening situation that would soon turn fatal.

The footage, now widely circulated, captures passengers relaxing on the boat as winds sweep across the reservoir. However, within a short span, the weather turned severe, with gusty winds intensifying and water conditions becoming unstable. Crucially, the video indicates that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at that time, pointing to a major lapse in safety enforcement. Although some passengers later managed to wear life jackets, which reportedly helped save around 25 lives, the initial lack of preparedness significantly increased the risk.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when the vessel, caught in rough waters on the Narmada River, lost balance and overturned. Rescue operations have since been underway, involving teams from the Army, the National Disaster Response Force, and the State Disaster Response Force. As of the latest update, 28 people have been rescued, while at least six individuals remain missing. The search operation has been hindered by low visibility and challenging underwater conditions, with officials indicating that more victims could still be trapped inside the submerged boat.

Authorities have stated that the vessel will be retrieved only after confirming that no passengers remain inside. According to officials, local construction workers played a critical role in the immediate rescue efforts, assisting survivors with ropes and helping evacuate those who had managed to stay afloat using life jackets. Eyewitness accounts suggest that passengers had raised concerns about the deteriorating weather and urged the crew to return, but their warnings were reportedly not acted upon in time.

Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi confirmed that the death toll rose after additional bodies were recovered during follow-up operations. He also announced that a detailed investigation has been ordered to examine possible negligence, particularly regarding the enforcement of life jacket usage and adherence to safety protocols.

In response to the incident, the state government has suspended similar cruise operations and initiated a broader inquiry into safety standards for such services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced financial assistance, including Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for the injured, through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

The tragedy has highlighted the critical importance of enforcing basic safety measures in tourist operations, especially in environments prone to sudden weather changes, and has intensified scrutiny of regulatory oversight in such activities.
