"Could not breathe": Six people stranded in a Nagpur mall lift break glass to avoid being choked

A routine visit to a shopping centre in Nagpur turned into a distressing ordeal when a lift malfunction at Fortune Mall left six people trapped inside a confined cabin for an extended period, exposing serious gaps in emergency preparedness and response systems.

What began as a sudden technical failure quickly escalated into a high-stress situation as the occupants found themselves stuck without proper ventilation. As minutes passed, the air inside the lift became increasingly difficult to breathe, triggering anxiety and panic among those inside. Several of them later described the experience as suffocating, with the enclosed space amplifying fear as no immediate assistance arrived.

Despite repeatedly contacting mall authorities and alerting staff about their situation, those trapped claimed that there was a significant delay in any rescue effort. The lack of prompt action not only prolonged their confinement but also intensified frustration and helplessness. According to their accounts, they kept reaching out for help, expecting a quick response in a public commercial space, but were left waiting as conditions inside the lift worsened.

As tension grew both inside the lift and among bystanders outside, the situation reached a breaking point. With no timely intervention from management and concern mounting over the occupants’ safety, people present at the mall eventually forced open the lift by breaking its glass panel. This improvised rescue allowed all six individuals to exit safely, preventing what could have escalated into a more serious medical emergency.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident has drawn attention to the reliability of safety infrastructure in high-footfall public areas. Questions are now being raised about whether routine maintenance checks were conducted, why emergency systems such as alarms or ventilation failed to function effectively, and why trained personnel did not respond swiftly.

The episode underscores the importance of strict safety compliance, rapid response protocols, and functional emergency mechanisms in elevators, particularly in crowded commercial establishments where delays can quickly turn minor technical faults into potentially life-threatening situations.
