A viral video of a Shimla police officer kicking a taxi driver during a fight led to his suspension

A viral video from Shimla has triggered widespread backlash after a police officer was seen allegedly kicking a taxi driver during a dispute linked to a VVIP movement, raising concerns about the use of force and professional conduct in public-facing situations.

The incident reportedly unfolded when a taxi and a motorcycle were parked along a roadside stretch, prompting intervention from a police officer tasked with managing movement in the area. The officer asked the driver to remove both vehicles, but the driver responded that it was not possible to move them simultaneously. What began as a routine instruction soon escalated into a heated exchange, with the officer allegedly threatening to issue a challan for traffic violations.

As the argument intensified, the taxi driver began recording the interaction on his phone, capturing the exchange in real time. In the footage, he is heard questioning the officer and asking for his name after noticing the nameplate. Moments later, the officer—identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Pyar Singh—is seen allegedly kicking the driver, an act that has been widely circulated and criticised across social media platforms.

The video has drawn sharp reactions from the public, with many questioning whether the officer’s response was proportionate to the situation, which appeared to remain largely verbal. The incident has reignited debate over accountability within law enforcement and the importance of restraint, especially during routine enforcement actions.

Authorities acted quickly after the video gained traction. The Shimla Police suspended the officer with immediate effect and initiated a departmental inquiry. Confirming the action, Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek stated that the department maintains a strict zero-tolerance approach toward misconduct and abuse of authority, adding that the suspension was necessary to ensure an impartial investigation.

Officials have emphasised that disciplinary proceedings are underway and that any deviation from established policing standards will attract strict consequences. The case continues to be examined as authorities seek to address both the specific incident and broader concerns around maintaining professionalism and public trust in policing practices.
