In Madhya Pradesh, a pickup truck overturns, killing twelve laborers and injuring thirteen

A tragic road accident in Dhar district resulted in the loss of 12 lives and left 13 others critically injured on Wednesday night, according to officials. The incident has highlighted concerns over vehicle overloading and road safety, particularly on poorly lit stretches of highways where such risks are significantly amplified.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm near a petrol pump when a pickup truck carrying around 35 labourers suddenly went out of control and overturned. Preliminary findings suggest that the vehicle was heavily overloaded, far exceeding its capacity, which may have contributed to the driver losing control. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the truck flipped multiple times, causing panic and chaos among passengers and bystanders. The severity of the crash led to multiple fatalities, including several children, intensifying the emotional impact of the incident.

Local residents, along with police personnel, responded quickly to the accident. Rescue operations were initiated immediately, with efforts focused on extracting trapped individuals from the wreckage of the overturned vehicle. The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including the district hospital, where emergency care was provided.

Doctors at the hospital confirmed that 13 of the injured victims remain in critical condition, with some suffering from life-threatening injuries. Medical teams are continuing efforts to stabilise them, while authorities monitor their progress closely. The condition of several patients remains serious, raising concerns about the final toll of the tragedy.

Initial investigations indicate that a combination of excessive load and possible high speed may have led to the loss of vehicle control. Authorities are examining all aspects, including the driver’s actions, road conditions, and mechanical factors, to determine the precise cause of the accident. Reports suggest that the group of labourers was travelling together when the incident occurred on a dimly lit section of the highway, which may have further contributed to the crash.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He also announced financial assistance for the victims through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, stating that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the families of the deceased, while those injured would receive Rs 50,000 to support their treatment and recovery.

The incident underscores the dangers associated with overcrowded vehicles and inadequate enforcement of safety regulations, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where such practices remain common. Authorities are expected to take further steps to ensure accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
