A sudden and intense storm accompanied by heavy rainfall caused widespread devastation in Sultanpur district on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including two children, and leaving at least 21 others injured. The extreme weather impacted several parts of the district simultaneously, leading to structural collapses, uprooted trees, and multiple fatal incidents, highlighting the vulnerability of rural infrastructure during severe climatic events.
Officials reported that areas such as Baldirai, Haliyapur, Akhand Nagar, Bandhua Kala, and Kudwar bore the brunt of the storm, with strong winds causing significant damage to homes and public structures. In Kudwar, a 20-year-old man named Mahendra Tiwari lost his life after an electricity pole fell on him. He had recently returned home just days earlier to attend his sister’s upcoming wedding and was on his way to a related function when the fatal incident occurred, adding a deeply personal tragedy to the broader disaster.
In Baldirai, two separate incidents claimed lives. An eight-year-old girl, Mahima, died when bricks from a damaged structure fell onto her house, while a 58-year-old man named Rambaran was killed after a tree collapsed onto his home. His wife sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. In Haliyapur, a 35-year-old woman, Rita, who was a mother of three, died when a mud wall and thatched roof gave way under the force of the storm.
Further casualties were reported in Akhand Nagar, where an eight-year-old boy named Sureman died instantly due to storm-related damage, while two others suffered severe injuries and were shifted to medical facilities for treatment. In Bandhua Kala, a 40-year-old woman, Sushma Gupta, was killed after a tree fell near her residence. Another fatality occurred in Kurebhar, where a 70-year-old woman named Kewala Devi lost her life when a mud wall collapsed during the storm.
Apart from the fatalities, at least 21 individuals sustained injuries across different locations in the district. Many of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and community health centres, where medical teams are currently providing treatment. Some victims are reported to be in serious condition, and authorities continue to monitor their recovery.
The storm also caused notable damage to infrastructure, including significant destruction at a toll plaza along the Purvanchal Expressway, which led to disruptions in traffic for several hours. The extent of the damage has prompted authorities to begin a detailed assessment to evaluate both public and private losses across the affected areas.
District Magistrate Inderjeet Singh expressed condolences to the families of the victims and instructed officials to ensure swift relief measures. He directed that compensation under the State Disaster Response Fund be distributed to affected families within 24 hours. Additionally, teams from the revenue and health departments have been deployed on the ground to carry out rescue operations, provide medical assistance, and assess the scale of destruction.
The district administration has also issued advisories urging residents to remain cautious and stay indoors during severe weather conditions. The incident underscores the destructive potential of sudden storms and the need for preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters in vulnerable regions.
