At least 58 people, including 27 children, were hospitalised after reportedly falling ill following the consumption of a local street food delicacy in a village in Jajpur district, Odisha, raising concerns about food safety and hygiene practices in the area.
The incident occurred in Patapur village under the Dasarathapur block, where residents had eaten “Cuttack Dahibara” purchased from a local vendor. Shortly after consuming the food, several individuals began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, fever, and general discomfort, prompting immediate medical attention. The affected persons were taken to nearby healthcare facilities, including the Dasarathapur Community Health Centre and the district headquarters hospital in Jajpur.
According to district authorities, several patients have responded to treatment, with at least 21 individuals discharged after their condition stabilised. However, many others remain under observation as doctors continue to monitor their recovery and manage symptoms.
State Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling visited the hospital to assess the situation firsthand and interact with patients and medical staff. He stated that preliminary findings suggest food contamination linked to the consumed dahibara, though definitive conclusions will depend on laboratory analysis.
Officials have collected both food and water samples from the site and sent them for detailed testing to determine the exact cause of the illness. In parallel, the state government has constituted three separate investigative teams to examine all aspects of the incident, including food preparation, storage conditions, and possible contamination sources.
Authorities have also assured that all affected individuals are receiving proper medical care and that necessary steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, as the investigation continues.
