India on Friday successfully carried out the test launch of the short-range ballistic missile Agni-1 from the Integrated Test Range located at Chandipur, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence.
The missile test was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command, the division responsible for managing and operating India’s strategic nuclear arsenal and missile systems. Officials stated that the launch was successful and achieved all mission objectives during the trial.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the test validated every major operational and technical parameter associated with the Agni-1 missile system. Authorities said the missile travelled along its pre-determined trajectory exactly as planned before accurately striking the designated target area.
Officials further stated that the successful launch demonstrated the continued reliability, precision and operational effectiveness of the Agni-1 missile platform. The test also highlighted the preparedness and combat readiness of the Strategic Forces Command, which remains responsible for maintaining India’s strategic deterrence posture.
The Agni-1 missile forms an important part of India’s “credible minimum deterrence” doctrine, which is aimed at maintaining sufficient strategic capability for national security and deterrence purposes without pursuing excessive nuclear expansion.
Agni-1 is a single-stage, solid-fuelled, road-mobile short-range ballistic missile capable of rapid deployment and high operational mobility. The missile has a strike range estimated between 700 and 900 kilometres, allowing it to target strategic locations within the region with precision.
The missile system is capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 1,000 kilograms and can deliver both conventional and nuclear warheads depending on operational requirements.
India officially inducted the Agni-1 missile into military service in 2004, and it has since remained an important component of the country’s strategic missile arsenal. Defence experts often describe the missile as a quick-reaction platform designed to provide high-precision strike capabilities against regional targets.
The broader Agni missile series was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, a long-term initiative focused on strengthening the country’s indigenous missile and defence technology capabilities.
Over the years, the Agni missile family has evolved into one of the central pillars of India’s strategic defence infrastructure, with different variants developed for varying operational ranges and mission requirements. The successful Agni-1 test on Friday once again reinforced India’s continued focus on maintaining operational readiness and strengthening its strategic deterrence capabilities.
