US agents detained and strip searched YouTuber MrWhoseTheBoss, who is of Indian descent

London-based Indian-origin YouTuber Arun Rupesh Maini, widely known online as MrWhoseTheBoss, has revealed that he was detained, strip-searched and eventually deported from the United States during a work trip several years ago. Maini said the experience was deeply traumatic and continues to affect his travel to the US even today. His account of the incident, shared in a recent interview, has triggered widespread sympathy and outrage across social media platforms.

Maini spoke about the incident during an interview with esports and gaming outlet Dexerto. The British-Indian content creator, who currently has more than 22.5 million subscribers on YouTube and is known globally for his technology review and gadget videos, explained that he had travelled to the United States after receiving what he described as the biggest professional offer of his career at the time.

According to Maini, he had been offered approximately $300,000 to cover and document the construction of a high-tech stadium project in the United States. He told Dexerto that he had been extremely excited about the opportunity and viewed it as one of the most significant moments in his career. However, the assignment never materialised because he was stopped by immigration authorities immediately after arriving in the country.

Recalling the incident, Maini said US border officials questioned him regarding the purpose of his visit before separating him from other passengers for additional screening. According to him, the interaction quickly became serious when officers instructed him to follow them away from the regular immigration area. He said this was the moment he realised something was wrong and that he would not be allowed to proceed normally through the airport.

Maini alleged that officials confiscated his phone and took him to a back room, leaving him completely unable to contact the sponsors who were reportedly waiting for him outside the airport. He said that after spending several hours in detention, the questioning by authorities became increasingly accusatory and intimidating. According to him, he was eventually escorted to another secured room where armed officers were present, which intensified his fear and anxiety during the ordeal.

The YouTuber further claimed that officials later subjected him to a strip search before placing him in a holding cell for several hours without communication. Describing the experience as humiliating and deeply violating, Maini said officers removed all his clothes and physically searched him in ways that left him feeling dehumanised. He added that throughout the detention he had no ability to contact his family, friends or colleagues, while his family had no idea where he was or what had happened to him.

Maini said the detention lasted for around 26 hours before he was ultimately deported back to the United Kingdom without being allowed to complete the assignment for which he had travelled. According to him, authorities returned his phone only after the deportation flight had already taken off, allowing him to finally inform his family about the situation after more than a day of uncertainty and silence.

The revelations sparked a massive reaction online after clips from the interview were uploaded on social media and YouTube. Thousands of viewers expressed shock and sympathy, with many describing the alleged treatment as disturbing, traumatic and excessive. Several commenters stated that Maini’s story overshadowed the rest of the interview because of the seriousness of the allegations involving detention and strip-search procedures.

Some users questioned how a professional content creator travelling for work could allegedly be treated in such a manner, while others said they had heard similar stories involving strict treatment at US border checkpoints. Many viewers also commented on the emotional impact of Maini’s description of being isolated from his family and unable to communicate for more than a day during the detention.

Maini also revealed that the incident has had long-term consequences for his travel experience in the United States. According to him, every subsequent visit to the US now results in additional scrutiny and secondary screening because a “black mark” allegedly remains associated with his travel records. He said he is routinely taken aside for further questioning whenever he enters the country, making each visit stressful and uncomfortable.

The incident has once again triggered broader online discussions regarding immigration screening procedures, treatment of travellers at international borders, and the emotional impact prolonged detention and invasive searches can have on individuals travelling for work or tourism.
