A note to the selectors? After a 29-ball 94, Sooryavanshi's post-match talk went viral

To most cricket followers, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has come to represent the ultra-aggressive face of modern T20 cricket, especially after his standout performances in the IPL 2026 season and his rapid rise into senior India T20I conversations. However, following his match-winning 29-ball 94 in the one-day tri-series final against Sri Lanka A, he used his post-match interaction to gently push back against the perception that he is only a T20-style batter.

When asked about adjusting to the 50-over format, Sooryavanshi responded with a calm but pointed reminder that he has substantial experience in the format, saying he has “played a lot of 50-over cricket” and suggesting that this aspect of his career is often overlooked. His comment reflected a broader point that while his reputation has been built on explosive T20 performances, his development has been rooted in longer white-ball cricket as well.

Statistically, his record supports that claim. Alongside his 34 appearances in high-profile T20 cricket, he has accumulated experience across 38 senior and youth one-day matches, including 25 Youth ODIs, where he has established himself as one of India’s most prolific Under-19 batters with over 1,400 runs and multiple centuries.

In the final, he translated that background into a dominant performance, reaching a half-century in just 11 balls and finishing with a strike rate above 300 in a knock that effectively sealed the title. The innings followed earlier inconsistencies in the tournament, which had raised questions about his adaptability on more challenging surfaces, but he credited adjustments made with coaching staff for helping him adapt his approach.

His performance has further strengthened the perception of him as a rare young batter capable of dominating across formats, with his latest innings adding weight to the argument that he is already pushing beyond age-group and developmental cricket and moving into contention for senior ODI consideration as well.
