A gunman opened fire at multiple locations across Midland, Texas, on Friday morning, killing one person and injuring at least nine others before being found dead following a lengthy standoff with police.
The shooting began around 8:00 a.m. local time and prompted a large-scale emergency response as law enforcement officers worked to locate and contain the suspect. The incident eventually culminated near a veterinary hospital, where police surrounded the gunman and brought the situation to an end after several hours.
Midland police later confirmed that the active shooter threat had ended and that the suspect was dead. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the gunman died by suicide, was killed during an exchange with police, or died under other circumstances.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as gunfire echoed through different parts of the city. Andrea Mendias, who works at an auto body shop near the location of the final standoff, said it sounded as though dozens of shots had been fired. Video recorded at the scene showed officers operating from an armoured vehicle while police robots were deployed as part of the tactical response.
According to Midland Memorial Hospital, four of the injured victims underwent surgery, while five others were reported to be in stable condition. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or provided details about a possible motive behind the attack.
The incident has revived painful memories of the 2019 mass shooting in the Midland-Odessa region, when a gunman killed seven people and injured more than two dozen others during a deadly rampage.
Midland, located in western Texas and home to roughly 140,000 residents, is now the focus of another major criminal investigation as authorities work to determine what led to the shooting and whether the suspect had any known connection to the victims or locations targeted.
