A tragic incident has shocked Maharashtra's Solapur district after a school principal, his wife and their two young sons were found dead inside their home. Police suspect the deaths may be connected to severe financial distress caused by substantial stock market losses and mounting debt.
The deceased have been identified as Yogesh Balasaheb Patil, a headmaster at a Zilla Parishad school in Chaugaon (Bk.) in Nandurbar district, his wife Madhuri Patil (37), and their sons Atharv (11) and Shivansh (9).
According to police, the incident is believed to have occurred on Thursday night. The tragedy came to light on Friday morning when a milk delivery person arrived at the family's residence and received no response despite repeated attempts to contact them. Concerned neighbours then helped force open the door and discovered the bodies inside the house.
Investigators said Yogesh Patil was found hanging, while the bodies of his wife and children were found in other parts of the residence. Preliminary findings indicate that the family may have consumed a poisonous substance before Patil allegedly died by suicide. However, police stressed that the exact sequence of events will only be established after forensic analysis and post-mortem examinations are completed.
Initial investigations suggest that Patil had been facing significant financial pressure due to losses in stock market investments. Police sources said he allegedly suffered losses of around Rs 1.8 crore. He had reportedly exhausted a large portion of the family's savings and borrowed money from relatives and friends, leading to increasing debt and emotional strain.
A 22-page note was recovered from the residence. According to police, the note contains details of financial transactions, debts and instructions regarding family property. Officials said that a preliminary review of the document does not indicate that Patil blamed any individual for his situation.
Police teams reached the scene soon after the bodies were discovered and launched an investigation. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and authorities are examining all aspects of the case, including the family's financial circumstances, investment losses and the contents of the note.
The incident has left residents of Hattij village and members of the education community in deep shock, with many expressing grief over the loss of an entire family. Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that further conclusions will depend on forensic findings and detailed examination of the evidence.
