A shocking case of alleged domestic violence and murder has emerged from Bihar's Bagaha, where a man is accused of killing his wife and then attempting to disguise the crime as a suicide by hanging her body from a mango tree. Police have arrested the accused husband, identified as Gautam Kaji, and sent him to judicial custody while further legal proceedings continue.
According to police officials, the case came to light after authorities received information about the body of a woman hanging from a tree in an orchard near Garkatti village. Following the alert, a police team immediately reached the location, secured the area, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
During the initial investigation, the deceased was identified as 25-year-old Hemlata Kumari, a resident of Garkatti village. Given the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, police treated the matter seriously and launched a detailed investigation. Senior officers, along with experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), visited the scene to collect evidence and conduct a scientific examination of the location.
As investigators began analysing the evidence, several inconsistencies reportedly emerged that cast doubt on the possibility of suicide. The physical evidence recovered from the scene, along with findings gathered during the investigation, led police to suspect that the woman may have been murdered before her body was hung from the tree.
Based on these suspicions, police detained Hemlata's husband, Gautam Kaji, for questioning. During interrogation, investigators allege that he admitted to killing his wife and provided details about the events leading up to her death.
According to the police, the accused stated that he had an argument with Hemlata, which escalated into a violent confrontation. During the dispute, he allegedly assaulted her. Investigators claim that he later took her to a nearby sugarcane field, where he strangled her to death.
Police further allege that after committing the murder, Gautam Kaji attempted to conceal the crime. According to his purported confession, he initially hid the body and later, under the cover of darkness, transported it to an orchard and hanged it from a mango tree. Investigators believe this was done deliberately to create the impression that Hemlata had died by suicide and to divert suspicion away from him.
The alleged attempt to stage the death as a suicide initially complicated the investigation. However, the forensic examination and evidence collected from the crime scene reportedly helped investigators uncover discrepancies that did not align with a typical suicide case, prompting them to pursue the matter as a suspected homicide.
The case took a further serious turn after the victim's father approached the police and lodged a formal complaint. Based on his complaint, authorities registered a case against the accused under provisions relating to dowry harassment and murder. Investigators are now examining whether the woman had been subjected to harassment or abuse before her death and whether dowry-related issues played a role in the incident.
Following his arrest, Gautam Kaji was produced before a court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Police continue to gather evidence, record witness statements, and await detailed forensic and post-mortem reports that will form an important part of the prosecution's case.
Bagaha Superintendent of Police Ramanand Kaushal stated that the investigation was carried out promptly and that the evidence collected pointed towards murder rather than suicide. He emphasised that the police would pursue the case vigorously and seek a speedy trial to ensure that justice is delivered without unnecessary delay.
The senior police officer also said that every effort would be made to ensure that the accused is brought to justice at the earliest possible opportunity. Authorities are continuing to examine all aspects of the case to establish a complete sequence of events and determine whether any additional offences or individuals are connected to the incident.
The case has generated concern among local residents and once again highlighted the issue of violence against women and the dangers of domestic disputes escalating into serious crimes. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to rely heavily on forensic findings, witness testimonies, and other evidence as they prepare the case for trial.
With the accused now in custody and the inquiry progressing, authorities have indicated that they will continue to monitor the case closely and work toward ensuring a thorough investigation and swift judicial process.
