Anthony Elanga is reprimanded by Alexander Isak for his anger with the knockout qualifiers

Anthony Elanga’s goal played a key role in helping Sweden reach the FIFA World Cup round of 32 after a 1-1 draw with Japan on Friday, June 26. However, his emotional reaction after the match drew as much attention as the result itself. Elanga mistakenly believed Sweden needed a win to qualify and was visibly upset at full time.

Teammate Alexander Isak later explained that he had to calm Elanga down, joking that he gave him a “scolding” after the match once it became clear that a draw was enough for Sweden to progress. Isak said Elanga was very disappointed because he wanted the team to push for another goal.

Elanga later said he had been fully focused on trying to win and was not aware of the qualification scenario. He added that he kept pushing until the end, even while dealing with cramp.

Sweden ultimately finished third in Group F, one point behind Japan, but still advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

The qualification rule allows the highest-ranked third-placed teams from different groups to move forward based on overall standings.

After the match, even Sweden’s goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom admitted he was initially unaware that the team had qualified. Head coach Graham Potter later commented on Elanga’s reaction, praising his effort while lightly joking about the misunderstanding.

Sweden will now wait for confirmation of their next opponent in the round of 32 once the remaining group-stage matches are completed.
