Eetha: As Shraddha Kapoor's movie creates excitement, the NCP demands that Vithabai's name appear in the title

Actor Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming biopic Eetha, based on the life of renowned Marathi folk performer Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar, has become embroiled in a controversy over its title. While the film seeks to spotlight the celebrated Lavani and Tamasha artist for a wider audience, concerns have emerged regarding whether her identity and legacy have been adequately acknowledged. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), along with Vithabai’s family members, has urged that her name be explicitly included in the film’s title.

Speaking to India Today, Suhas Suryavanshi, Mumbai Culture President of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), raised objections about both the title and portrayal. He described Vithabai as a towering figure in Marathi folk tradition and said that although the effort to bring her story to cinema is appreciated, it must be done with full respect to her dignity and contribution. He argued that the film should carry her name to properly honour her legacy.

He further recalled her legendary dedication to performance, stating that she reportedly continued performing even during pregnancy and resumed the stage shortly after giving birth, underscoring her devotion to her art.

Suryavanshi also pointed to the cultural and historical significance of Vithabai’s origins in Pandharpur, noting that these aspects should be properly represented in the film. He added that concerns extend beyond the title to possible fictionalisation of her life story, and requested that the makers organise an advance screening for the family and associated stakeholders before release.

Vithabai Narayangaonkar remains one of Maharashtra’s most iconic folk artists, widely revered as the “Tamasha Samratni” for her extraordinary contribution to Lavani and Tamasha traditions. Her life story is remembered for its intensity and commitment to performance, including accounts of her returning to the stage soon after childbirth.

The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on August 28, 2026.
