With both Alliance (Prime Video) and Lock Upp: Sach ya Sazaa (Netflix) now available to stream, comparisons between the two confinement-based reality shows were almost unavoidable. However, host Kunal Kemmu does not see them as direct competitors, especially as he makes his debut in the reality TV space.
Speaking to India Today, Kemmu said it is difficult to label the situation as a rivalry since audience preferences vary widely. He noted that some viewers remain loyal to a single format, while others may explore both shows before deciding what they prefer, and some may watch both without drawing comparisons.
When asked about Lock Upp having established hosts like Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, Kemmu responded playfully, saying he does not consider them rivals. He remarked that they have already proven themselves in the space, while he is still new to it and treating it as his first outing, adding that he has no expectations or pressure.
The actor also reflected on the growing popularity of captive reality formats globally and on OTT platforms. He admitted he has enjoyed several reality shows over the years, though his engagement with them has varied depending on the format and duration. He said he tends to prefer shorter, task-driven reality shows that conclude within a defined timeframe rather than long-running ones.
Kemmu recalled being an avid viewer since the early days of shows like Roadies, although he noted that some formats he once enjoyed no longer appeal to him in the same way. He added that, like many viewers, his tastes have evolved over time.
Discussing the appeal of reality television, he said its strength lies in showcasing real emotions and unscripted human behaviour, which satisfies viewers’ curiosity about others’ lives. He also pointed out that audience participation through voting increases engagement and investment in such shows.
At the same time, Kemmu highlighted the ethical complexity of the genre, noting that emotional or painful moments can sometimes become entertainment for viewers. He stressed the importance of recognising this thin line and questioned where boundaries should be drawn.
He concluded by acknowledging that while audience demand drives such content, creators also bear responsibility for what they choose to produce and promote.
Alliance continues to stream daily on Prime Video.
