Elon Musk predicts that in four years, AI will likely surpass all humans in intelligence

Elon Musk has once again made a striking prediction about the future of artificial intelligence, saying that AI systems could collectively surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within the next four to five years. His comment came in response to a post by entrepreneur Peter H. Diamandis on X, which argued that human progress depends on expanding access to tools, resources and “more minds” capable of innovation.

Musk agreed with the broader theme of accelerating human capability but took it further, suggesting that artificial intelligence itself is on track to become more powerful than humanity’s total intellectual output within a short timeframe. He has previously made similar forecasts, estimating that artificial general intelligence could emerge as early as 2026 and that systems capable of exceeding human-level intelligence across the board could appear by the end of the decade.

In earlier remarks, including at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Musk has suggested that AI may surpass the collective intelligence of humanity around 2030 or 2031, while individual systems could outperform humans in many tasks even sooner. He has repeatedly argued that technological progress in AI is advancing faster than most policymakers and institutions anticipate.

His comments come amid rapid development in the AI sector, where companies such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic and xAI are building increasingly capable models that can write code, generate content, analyse data and assist in research. Massive investment is also flowing into computing infrastructure, including data centres and advanced chips, as competition intensifies.

Musk’s broader vision links AI development to a future of abundance driven by automation. He has argued that AI-powered systems and humanoid robots, including Tesla’s Optimus project, could eventually take over a wide range of physical and industrial tasks, reducing costs and increasing the availability of goods and services.
