Half Man: Richard Gadd's toxic masculinity show will launch on streaming services in India

Actor Richard Gadd is returning after Baby Reindeer with a new six-episode drama titled Half Man, which will stream in India from July 3 on Lionsgate Play. The series reunites Gadd with actor Jamie Bell and focuses on two men whose lives are deeply connected through friendship, loyalty, loss, and hidden truths, while also exploring themes like male bonding, trauma, violence, and toxic masculinity.

Jamie Bell plays Niall Kennedy, whose wedding becomes a turning point in a long-standing relationship that has developed over decades. The story unfolds over a 30-year timeline, showing how the characters Ruben and Niall are shaped by unspoken emotions, anger, and lasting emotional scars.

In comments ahead of the release, Gadd said that his earlier work had already touched on masculinity through personal struggles, but with this project he wanted to explore what masculinity means in a changing world through two characters. He noted that discussions around men and masculinity have become more intense but also somewhat simplified, and he aimed to approach the subject in a more layered way.

He added that the term “toxic masculinity” is widely used and discussed for good reason, but still has aspects that are not fully explored in mainstream storytelling. He also said that social expectations often make it difficult for men to express emotions and vulnerability, which inspired him to explore this dynamic through the characters of Niall and Ruben.

Jamie Bell explained that the series follows the evolution of the two men’s relationship over 30 years, beginning in their teenage years and continuing into adulthood as life pulls them apart and brings them back together. He said the show looks at how their shared history and the culture they grew up in have shaped their identities and their understanding of masculinity.

Actors Stuart Campbell and Mitchell Robertson portray the younger versions of the two leads. The series is described as focusing on emotional intensity, instability, and long-term psychological impact, with Gadd’s physical transformation in the role of Ruben adding to the character’s presence and emotional weight.
