PM Modi and Trump share many similarities: US envoy explains both leaders

US Ambassador Sergio Gor has said that despite recent strains in India–US relations, the personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump remains the central stabilising factor in the partnership.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Gor said he sees strong similarities between the two leaders, noting that both are highly “hands-on” and focused on delivering results. According to him, this shared leadership style helps sustain their political chemistry even when broader diplomatic or trade issues become complicated.

Gor, a close associate of Trump, described the relationship between the two leaders as long-standing, referring to earlier engagements such as the “Howdy Modi” and “Namaste Trump” events during Trump’s first term. He said both leaders “think alike” in terms of execution and decision-making, which he believes forms the core of their connection.

He added that Prime Minister Modi is “incredibly dynamic” and outcome-driven, drawing a parallel with Trump’s own approach to governance. In his view, this similarity is a key reason why the relationship continues to remain strong despite occasional diplomatic friction.

The US envoy also said that the latest bilateral interaction between the two leaders was positive and extended for over an hour, describing the meeting as warm and productive. He suggested that there was no significant strain in personal ties even amid broader geopolitical tensions.

According to Gor, President Trump maintains a favourable impression of India, shaped by his 2017 visit, which he reportedly still recalls for its energy and vibrancy. He added that Trump continues to speak positively about India and its people.

Gor further indicated that Trump is expected to visit India early next year, which has led to speculation about a possible Republic Day appearance as chief guest.

On trade relations, Gor acknowledged that negotiations between India and the US are still ongoing, with a few issues remaining unresolved. He suggested that the trade agreement could be finalised within weeks or months, depending on the completion of technical and legal drafting.

He noted that discussions are focused largely on finalising language and resolving outstanding points, even as broader economic and strategic engagement between the two countries continues.

The ambassador’s remarks come at a time when India–US ties have faced periodic challenges related to tariffs, trade disputes, sanctions, and geopolitical developments. However, he emphasised that the personal connection between the two leaders continues to act as an anchor for the relationship.
