The internet claims that WhatsApp is evolving into Telegram: Story in five points after adding a username option

WhatsApp is introducing usernames, allowing users to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. Meta says the feature is designed to improve privacy, especially for users who prefer not to reveal their mobile numbers.

However, the announcement has sparked concerns about potential misuse, including impersonation and scams. Critics argue that usernames could make WhatsApp resemble platforms like Telegram, where users can be contacted without knowing their phone numbers.

KnotDating co-founder Jasveer Singh said the feature could create opportunities for scammers, while entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo warned that, without strong anti-abuse measures, it could become problematic in countries like India. He pointed out that people could create similar-looking usernames to impersonate public figures and potentially solicit money. Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma also raised concerns about the possibility of confusing, similar-sounding usernames appearing alongside verified accounts.

How WhatsApp Usernames Work

Users can create a username through the account section in WhatsApp settings. Usernames can be up to 35 characters long and can be edited or removed later. The feature requires the latest version of the WhatsApp app.

WhatsApp says there will be no searchable directory of usernames. Users will only be able to find an account if they know and enter the exact username.

What Is the Username Key?

WhatsApp is also introducing a Username Key, a unique four-digit code that can add an extra layer of privacy. When enabled, people will need both the username and the key to contact a user. However, this feature is turned off by default.

Can Usernames Be Misused?

While concerns about impersonation persist, WhatsApp notes that every account will still require a linked phone number, meaning users cannot create anonymous accounts without a valid number.

To reduce impersonation risks, WhatsApp has implemented safeguards. Exact usernames already used on Instagram or Facebook cannot be claimed by others on WhatsApp. Users who want the same username across platforms may need to link their Instagram account. The company has also said that certain usernames associated with prominent public figures will be reserved to prevent misuse.

Currently, users can reserve their usernames as WhatsApp gradually rolls out the feature worldwide over the coming months.
