Alexandra Eala continues her incredible run at Wimbledon but Iga Swiatek has an unexpected exit

Defending champion Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon title defence ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday, July 4, as World No. 32 Alexandra Eala produced another fearless display to secure a stunning 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 victory in the third round on Centre Court.

The 20-year-old Filipina took two hours and 15 minutes to complete one of the biggest upsets of this year's Championships. After edging a tense first-set tie-break, Eala dominated the second set to seal the biggest win of her career.

Swiatek, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites after winning the Wimbledon title last year, struggled to cope with Eala's aggressive baseline play and precise shot-making.

The result added another chapter to their growing rivalry. Eala had shocked Swiatek in their first meeting at the 2025 Miami Open before the Polish star avenged that defeat on clay in Madrid. However, their first encounter on grass belonged entirely to the Filipina, whose flat groundstrokes and fearless approach consistently troubled the defending champion.

Speaking after the match, Eala struggled to contain her emotions.

"I don't know how to describe it. I'm into the second week of a Grand Slam. It's an amazing feeling. Iga is a phenomenal player and a wonderful person. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share Centre Court with her at Wimbledon," she said.

"I'm very emotional right now. For someone like Iga, who has won so many Grand Slams, or legends like Serena and Venus, this achievement might seem small. But for someone who grew up in the Philippines, it means everything," she added.

The victory marked another historic milestone for Philippine tennis. After becoming the first Filipino player to reach the third round of a Grand Slam earlier this week, Eala has now become the first Filipino man or woman in the Open Era to advance to the second week of a Grand Slam singles tournament.

The win also improved her head-to-head record against Swiatek to 2-1 and marked her fifth victory over a top-10 opponent in 2026, further establishing her as one of the WTA Tour's fastest-rising stars.

The opening set proved decisive, with both players saving multiple set points before Eala edged the marathon tie-break 11-9. She carried that momentum into the second set, building an early lead and giving Swiatek little opportunity to recover.

Although the defending champion briefly threatened a comeback, Eala remained composed to close out the match in style.

Eala will next face Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round after the Italian booked her place with a convincing win over Maria Sakkari.

Having already created history, Eala's remarkable Wimbledon run continues as she emerges as one of the standout stories of the 2026 Championships.
