Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-awaited India debut may have ended with a modest score, but the 15-year-old showcased enough promise to underline why he is regarded as one of the country's brightest young talents. Playing in the second T20I against England on Saturday, Sooryavanshi scored 14 runs from nine balls, including two sixes.
The teenager from Bihar became India's youngest-ever international cricketer when he walked out to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma at Old Trafford in Manchester, breaking the record previously held by Shafali Verma.
At just 15 years and 99 days old, Sooryavanshi marked another milestone in his rapid rise after receiving his maiden India cap from Tilak Varma following an emotional address by head coach Gautam Gambhir in the dressing room.
Facing a new-ball attack led by Jofra Archer and fellow debutant Josh Tongue was always expected to be a stern test. Tongue consistently troubled him with sharp bounce and pace, while Archer also kept the pressure on. After surviving the early challenge, Sooryavanshi got off the mark with an edged yorker that rolled towards square leg.
Despite the testing conditions, the fearless approach that has defined his rise soon came to the fore.
His first statement came against Archer when he shuffled across to a 148 kmph full delivery, got down on one knee and scooped it brilliantly over fine leg for his maiden international six. The audacious stroke against one of the world's fastest bowlers brought the Old Trafford crowd to life and reflected his confidence.
He followed it up in the next over by rocking back to a full delivery from Josh Tongue and launching it over midwicket for another towering six. The clean strike highlighted his bat speed and attacking intent as India made a brisk start.
However, international cricket soon offered its first lesson.
Introduced into the attack, Will Jacks deceived the youngster with a slower, wider delivery after setting him up with a fuller ball. Attempting another aggressive shot, Sooryavanshi charged down the pitch but failed to connect, allowing Jos Buttler to complete a sharp stumping.
Although his innings ended sooner than he would have hoped, the score did not fully capture the impression he made. By taking on bowlers of Archer and Tongue's calibre without hesitation, Sooryavanshi demonstrated the fearless mindset that earned him his opportunity. His debut may have been brief, but it also suggested that many bigger innings could lie ahead in his international career.
