At just 15 years, 3 months and 7 days old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the youngest player to make his international debut for India. The teenage batting sensation from Samastipur, Bihar, earned his maiden cap in the second T20I against England after grabbing widespread attention with his explosive performances in the Indian Premier League.
Vaibhav received his India cap from Tilak Varma following an inspiring address by head coach Gautam Gambhir. The youngster was then warmly welcomed by his teammates in an emotional moment before the match.
Backing the youngster, Shreyas Iyer said, "You've seen him over the last few months and the way he's been batting. I feel he completely deserves to be in the squad. He's someone who doesn't take pressure at all and has an unflinching nature. He's well aware of what lies ahead in the coming matches. The way he bats in the nets and takes on the bowlers shows the kind of player he is."
Many believed Vaibhav could have debuted earlier after being left on the bench during both T20Is against Ireland and the opening T20I against England in Durham.
However, on Saturday, July 4, India's team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, finally handed the aggressive opener his first opportunity at the international level during the T20I in Manchester.
Vaibhav earned his promotion to the senior squad following an impressive showing for India A in the tri-series held in Dambulla in June. In the final against Sri Lanka A, he produced a sensational innings, smashing the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls and coming close to matching the fastest-ever List A century.
His remarkable knock ended on 94 from only 29 deliveries, falling just six runs short of a century.
That performance appears to have convinced the selectors that the young batter was ready for international cricket.
Youngest player to debut for India
At 15 years and 99 days, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has rewritten the record books by becoming India's youngest-ever international debutant. He surpassed Shafali Verma, who made her debut in 2019 at 15 years and 239 days. Among men's cricketers, he eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar, whose debut at 16 had remained India's benchmark for more than 30 years.
Although India has occasionally introduced teenage talents early, very few have debuted at such a young age or carried similar levels of public expectation. Vaibhav is also significantly younger than several other notable Indian internationals at the time of their debuts. Parthiv Patel made his international debut at 17 years and 152 days during India's 2002 tour of England, while Harbhajan Singh debuted at 17 years and 288 days.
Among more recent stars, Yuvraj Singh made his ODI debut at 18 years and 124 days.
