According to Australian media reports, the Australian Federal Police has launched an investigation into an online death threat aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his planned visit to Melbourne on July 9. Investigators have reportedly traced an IP address connected to the social media post.
The threat appeared in the comments section of a Facebook post promoting the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event, which is set to be held at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium on July 9 as part of the Prime Minister's Australia visit, The Australia Today reported.
The comment, posted by an account under the name Abu Mustafa (translated), stated: "the roof tops of the stadium better close during the event or he will be coming to Australia for his death".
According to The Australia Today, the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police on the same day the comment was posted online.
Citing sources familiar with the investigation, the publication reported that officers have identified the IP address linked to the post and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the message. Authorities are also determining whether any criminal laws may have been violated.
The Australian Federal Police has not issued a public statement regarding the investigation.
Australian media reports noted that law enforcement agencies in the country treat threats against visiting world leaders with the highest level of seriousness. Security for such high-profile visits is generally coordinated by multiple agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, state police, and specialist protective security units.
The alleged threat has surfaced just days before Prime Minister Modi's official visit to Australia, during which he is expected to participate in bilateral meetings as well as community events, including the Melbourne gathering.
