WhatsApp has introduced a major update to its calling experience, allowing users to make and receive voice and video calls directly through a web browser. CEO Kunal Shah announced the feature on X with a light-hearted jab at Chrome users known for keeping dozens of tabs open. Sharing a screenshot of what appeared to be a WhatsApp call with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Shah wrote, "WhatsApp calls now work in your browser. Your 47 open Chrome tabs finally got company that's actually useful."
Along with browser-based calling, WhatsApp has also launched a new Call Transfer feature that enables users to move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting. The update is intended to make calling more seamless across smartphones, desktops and web browsers.
Previously, users needed to install the WhatsApp desktop application to make calls from a computer. With the latest update, WhatsApp says both individual and group voice and video calls can now be made directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need for the desktop app. The company said the feature is particularly useful for people using shared computers, office devices that restrict app installations, or those who simply prefer working from a browser.

The new browser-based calling feature offers the same end-to-end encryption available on WhatsApp's mobile and desktop apps. Users will also have access to familiar calling features such as screen sharing, emoji reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, complete call history and favourite contacts directly within the browser.
WhatsApp added that browser calls come with no time limits or additional charges while maintaining the same privacy and security protections as calls made on other supported devices.
New Call Transfer feature
WhatsApp has also introduced a Call Transfer feature that allows users to shift an ongoing group call from one device to another without ending the conversation.
For instance, a user can begin a group call on a smartphone while travelling and then transfer it to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app upon reaching home for a better viewing experience on a larger screen. The feature also works in reverse, allowing users to move the call back to their mobile device whenever needed.
The new browser calling and Call Transfer features are being rolled out globally and are expected to reach all users over the coming days. With these additions, WhatsApp aims to make its calling experience more flexible by enabling uninterrupted conversations across multiple devices.
