About the film
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan marks Vijay's final theatrical release before transitioning to a full-time political career. He plays Vetri Kondan, a former police officer determined to honour a promise by training his adopted daughter Viji, portrayed by Mamitha Baiju, to become a soldier. Bobby Deol stars as the antagonist, John Himler.
India Today awarded the film 2 out of 5 stars, noting that while the first half remains engaging, the narrative loses focus after the interval by attempting to combine geopolitical conflict, terrorism, aerial warfare and action spectacle into an increasingly chaotic storyline.
Despite opening below the pace of Vijay's previous two releases, Jana Nayagan has still crossed ₹112.50 crore in worldwide gross collections within two days, giving the film a solid start at the global box office.
