Prime Video unveiled the teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, offering a first glimpse of a darker chapter in the series as Sauron's rise, the forging of the One Ring and an expanding war reshape Middle-earth.
The 99-second teaser was revealed during a panel hosted by Benjamin Walker, with cast members Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman and newcomer Jamie Campbell Bower in attendance. Prime Video also announced several casting updates, introduced the Nazgnagl and confirmed that Simon Pegg will voice the Balrog in the upcoming season.
The teaser opens in a devastated Mordor, where lightning flashes over Barad-dûr as Charlie Vickers' Sauron declares, "Now, is the mighty hour come." It then builds towards the creation of the One Ring, showing molten gold as Sauron forges it within the fortress.
According to the show's creators, the sequence includes one of the most ambitious shots attempted in the series. Vickers revealed that filming the scene was an emotional experience, saying he was moved to tears on his first day shooting it. The sequence reportedly took nearly two weeks to complete.
The trailer presents a darker vision of Middle-earth as Sauron's influence spreads and kingdoms prepare for war. Prime Video said Season 3 focuses on Sauron's efforts to forge the One Ring and dominate Middle-earth, forcing rival kingdoms into uneasy alliances to resist him.
Galadriel, Celeborn and Gandalf
One of the teaser's quieter moments features Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark, sharing a dance with her estranged husband Celeborn, portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower. Although Celeborn had previously been mentioned in the series, Season 3 marks his first on-screen appearance.
Bower described Celeborn as a "lover boy" and hinted that the character would play a significant role in the coming conflict between the Elves and Sauron.
The teaser also suggests that Daniel Weyman's Stranger has fully embraced his identity as Gandalf. The wizard is shown stepping into a leadership role while warning others about the dangers ahead, declaring that those who oppose Sauron must be prepared to face death.
Nazgnagl make their debut
The trailer also introduces the Nazgnagl, described as Sauron's ring-servants and an earlier Second Age version of the Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, from the Third Age.
During the Hall H presentation, four actors dressed as Nazgnagl in full armour made a surprise appearance on stage as they awaited Sauron's command.
As Sauron's influence grows, the teaser suggests that only a handful of strongholds remain unconquered. Alliances become increasingly fragile as kingdoms struggle to survive. Durin, played by Owain Arthur, declares, "There are no friends of Mordor here," as the Dwarves retreat into Khazad-dûm.
The new season sets the stage for Elves, Dwarves, Men and Wizards to unite against the growing darkness.
New cast and release schedule
Prime Video also confirmed that Simon Pegg will provide the voice of the Balrog, marking the first time the creature will speak in The Rings of Power. A behind-the-scenes featurette, Bringing Season Three's Creatures to Life, showcased the Balrog alongside Fell-beasts, Mûmakil and Orcs.
The platform announced several new cast additions. Eddie Marsan will portray Thráin, the older brother of King Durin IV and father of Thorin Oakenshield. Andrew Richardson joins as Anárion, the son of Elendil and brother of Isildur, while Adam Young will play Marnkh, an Orc whose true identity is said to hold unexpected secrets.
Previously announced additions include Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn and Zubin Varla as Khamûl the Easterling of Rhûn.
The writers revealed that Season 3 is set five years after the fall of Eregion. With Sauron's armies having swept across much of Middle-earth, only Khazad-dûm, Lindon and Rivendell remain major centres of resistance as he completes the forging of the One Ring.
Showrunner Patrick McKay described the upcoming season as "darker" and "more dangerous," adding that "there is no one who is safe." Charlie Vickers said Sauron becomes "ruthless and relentless, totally consumed by his obsession."
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will premiere on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. The first four episodes will debut together, followed by episodes five and six on November 18, with the final two episodes releasing on November 25.
