"The 50-over World Cup is the real World Cup for me. That's what we grew up watching. Playing it in India, in front of our home fans, made it even more special. We played outstanding cricket until the final," Rohit Sharma had said while reflecting on India's heartbreaking defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Those words captured how deeply the 50-over format means to Rohit. After missing out on India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad, he spent years establishing himself as one of the game's greatest ODI batters. Leading India at home in the 2023 World Cup, he adopted an aggressive, selfless approach but fell just one step short of lifting the trophy. His hope of another chance at redemption, however, now appears uncertain.
According to reports, the selectors have decided that the 39-year-old does not feature in India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
ROHIT'S ODI FUTURE UNDER CLOUD
The reports surfaced during the second ODI against England, creating confusion after captain Shubman Gill had publicly backed both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli before the series.
Gill described the senior duo as the backbone of India's batting over the past decade and said their experience remained invaluable to the team.
However, reports citing BCCI sources claimed the senior selection committee and head coach Gautam Gambhir had informed Rohit that the team was preparing for the future and intended to give younger players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, greater opportunities after the England tour.
According to the reports, Rohit wanted to continue playing and had worked on improving his fitness, but the selectors had left the final decision on retirement to him.
The contrasting messages have created uncertainty over Rohit's future. Having already retired from T20Is after India's 2024 World Cup triumph and stepped away from Test cricket, the veteran opener is now facing questions over his ODI career as well.
STRUGGLING FOR RHYTHM
The uncertainty has coincided with a difficult series against England, where Rohit has struggled to find his usual rhythm.
In the second ODI, he appeared unusually uncomfortable against the short ball—an area that has long been one of his strengths.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta observed that Rohit looked mentally unsure at the crease.
He noted that Rohit's batting has always been defined by clarity of thought but felt that, in this series, the opener seemed uncertain about when to shift gears. After several dot balls, the pressure appeared to build, affecting his decision-making.
Whether the off-field speculation has contributed to his struggles remains unclear, but the timing has inevitably fuelled discussion.
WILL ROHIT WALK AWAY?
Reports suggest Rohit has expressed his dissatisfaction over the selectors' decision during conversations with BCCI officials. Having already lost the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, he reportedly believes he still has enough to contribute as a specialist batter.
A moment during the second ODI captured the mood surrounding India's senior players. Rohit was seen sitting alongside Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah in the dugout, with all three appearing subdued as speculation over the team's transition continued.
India has witnessed several difficult generational shifts, but this one has once again highlighted the challenges of balancing experience with the need to prepare for the future.
While the selectors appear ready to move towards a younger squad, Rohit reportedly remains determined to continue. Whether he gets the opportunity to script one final chapter in ODI cricket now rests with the selectors—and with the player himself.
