India wrapped up their Zimbabwe tour in emphatic fashion, completing a 3-0 T20I series whitewash with a convincing 35-run victory at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi starred once again, earning both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
The series win provided a much-needed boost for Shreyas Iyer's side after a disappointing tour of the United Kingdom, where India failed to register a single win against Ireland and England. Although the triumph over Zimbabwe cannot completely erase the memories of that poor campaign, it has restored confidence ahead of a packed international schedule.
The victory also capped a memorable weekend for India, who reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings after Saturday's win. Sunday's result secured India's first 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe since 2010, while the hosts suffered their second successive bilateral series defeat following their recent loss to Bangladesh.
SOORYAVANSHI SHINES AGAIN
India's innings began on a disappointing note as Abhishek Sharma's struggles continued. The left-hander managed just two runs before edging Blessing Muzarabani behind, marking the third consecutive time the Zimbabwe pacer had dismissed him in the series.
Any hopes Zimbabwe had of capitalising on the early breakthrough were quickly dashed by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The 15-year-old once again displayed remarkable composure, attacking both pace and spin with confidence. Alongside Ishan Kishan, he ensured India dominated the powerplay despite the early wicket, maintaining an impressive scoring rate.
Sooryavanshi reached his second T20I half-century in only 31 deliveries before accelerating further. His clean ball-striking, fearless approach and excellent placement kept Zimbabwe's bowlers under pressure throughout the innings.
A maiden international century looked well within reach before Wesley Madhevere provided the breakthrough. Attempting another attacking shot, Sooryavanshi mistimed a lofted drive, with Brad Evans taking a superb diving catch at long-off to end a brilliant knock of 81 from 49 balls, featuring eight fours and four sixes.
Although he fell short of a century, the youngster had already laid the foundation for a commanding total.
Ishan Kishan contributed a fluent 29, captain Shreyas Iyer chipped in with a quickfire 27, while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 25 off just 14 deliveries as India posted a formidable total.
PACERS SET THE TONE FOR INDIA
India's bowlers once again dominated proceedings, continuing the form that had defined the series.
Mayank Yadav struck with the very first delivery of Zimbabwe's innings, dismissing Brian Bennett for the second time in the series. It was the third occasion in his T20I career that he claimed a wicket with the opening ball of an innings, joining Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the only Indian bowlers to achieve the feat three times.
Yash Thakur then ripped through the top order by removing Dion Myers before producing a sharp caught-and-bowled effort to dismiss skipper Sikandar Raza for his second successive duck of the series. On a hat-trick, Thakur was denied when Ryan Burl dispatched his first delivery to the boundary.
Ashok Sharma also impressed despite an early setback when Ishan Kishan dropped a straightforward catch behind the stumps. The young pacer bounced back to claim his maiden international wicket by clean bowling Tadiwanashe Marumani with an excellent delivery.
BURL FIGHTS LONE BATTLE
Zimbabwe showed resilience despite the mounting pressure.
Ryan Burl and Wesley Madhevere put together a determined 60-run partnership for the fifth wicket, briefly reviving the hosts' hopes. Madhevere scored a composed 28 before Mayank Yadav returned to break the stand, leaving Burl to carry the chase almost alone.
Burl continued to fight, reaching a hard-earned half-century from 42 deliveries while keeping the scoreboard moving despite losing partners regularly. However, Zimbabwe lacked meaningful support from the other end.
Mayank Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi and Ashok Sharma continued to strike at regular intervals, ensuring the required run rate kept climbing. Despite a few dropped catches and minor fielding lapses, India's bowlers remained disciplined to seal a comfortable victory.
Zimbabwe eventually finished on 161/7, handing India a 35-run win and a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep.
After a disappointing tour of the United Kingdom, India finally have reason to celebrate. While the opposition may not have been among the strongest, standout performances from youngsters like Sooryavanshi, another impressive showing from the pace attack and the return to the top of the ICC T20I rankings have provided valuable momentum heading into the next phase of the season.
