Lift to UP police officer, missing Rs 20,000, followed by a 13-kilometer pursuit: The crazy voyage of a truck driver

A sub-inspector in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur has been suspended after a truck driver accused him of stealing Rs 20,000 while the officer was travelling in the driver's vehicle.

The incident, portions of which were captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has triggered widespread attention, prompting the police to initiate both a criminal case and a departmental inquiry.

According to the complaint, the sub-inspector requested a lift from the truck driver while travelling through Hamirpur. The driver agreed and dropped him near a toll plaza, where the officer allegedly got into his personal vehicle and left.

After resuming his journey, the truck driver reportedly discovered that Rs 20,000 was missing from his belongings. Suspecting the sub-inspector, he turned his truck around and began pursuing the officer.

The chase reportedly continued for nearly 13 kilometres before the driver managed to stop the officer. Videos that have since surfaced online show the two confronting each other, with the driver accusing the sub-inspector of taking the money.

According to the allegations, the missing cash was recovered from the sub-inspector's uniform during the confrontation. The footage quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions on social media.

Following the circulation of the video, Hamirpur Police issued a statement through its official X account confirming that action had been initiated against the officer.

"A video dated July 6, 2026, is circulating on social media in which a person is accusing a sub-inspector of stealing money. Based on the written complaint submitted by the complainant, proceedings have been initiated to register a case under the relevant sections at Kotwali Nagar Police Station, Hamirpur. The concerned sub-inspector has been suspended with immediate effect, and a departmental inquiry has also been ordered. The investigation is underway, and further legal action will be taken based on its findings," the statement, signed by Circle Officer Sadar Yashpal Singh, said.

The police have not publicly confirmed the circumstances under which the cash was allegedly recovered. The allegations remain under investigation, and authorities have said that the outcome of both the departmental inquiry and the criminal investigation will determine the next course of action against the suspended officer.
