Following the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the Assembly elections, incidents of people throwing eggs at TMC leaders and chanting slogans such as “chor, chor” have become increasingly frequent. On Wednesday, TMC MP Mahua Moitra became the latest leader to face such protests. During a Facebook Live broadcast, she alleged that “BJP goons” had hurled eggs and brinjals at a building in Krishnanagar where she was meeting party workers.
The incident occurred on the same day that the Calcutta High Court criticised the BJP-led West Bengal government over a series of egg-throwing incidents targeting TMC leaders, describing the practice as a “social evil”.
Mahua Moitra Broadcasts Incident Live
A group of protesters gathered outside the venue on Wednesday, waving black flags and raising “go back” slogans. Visuals from the scene showed eggs and brinjals being thrown at the building where Moitra was present.
Streaming the events live from an upper floor of the party office, Moitra claimed that those involved were not ordinary citizens but BJP supporters.
“This is the law-and-order situation in the state. These are BJP goons, not common people,” the Krishnanagar MP said.
In the video, Moitra was seen using a curtain as a shield while the protesters continued to throw eggs and brinjals toward the window.
She further alleged that the police and CRPF personnel reached the location only after a delay of around 15 minutes.
“I have contacted the DGP and other authorities, but the police are merely watching. I want the entire country to witness this. Even the CRPF is unable to disperse the crowd,” she said.
Moitra also claimed that the identities of the protesters were clearly visible and expressed concern that authorities might later claim they could not identify those responsible.
Addressing party workers, she asserted that she would not be intimidated and refused police protection.
“This is my constituency. I am the elected MP from here and I am not leaving. The whole of Bengal should see this hooliganism,” she said.
Later, Moitra shared another video on X, tagging the state’s Director General of Police. In the post, she alleged that police had been observing the situation for two hours without taking action and claimed the crowd was waiting to attack her vehicle if she attempted to leave.
This was not the first such incident involving Moitra. On June 13, she alleged that BJP Mahila Morcha members had gathered outside the Krishnanagar court carrying eggs and tomatoes ahead of her scheduled appearance in a legal matter. She ultimately did not attend the hearing that day.
High Court Seeks Action Report
More than two months after the Assembly elections, public anger against several TMC leaders has continued, with multiple incidents involving eggs being thrown at politicians accused of corruption. The TMC has consistently alleged that the BJP is orchestrating these protests.
The trend began in May when Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, was targeted with eggs while visiting families of party workers affected by post-election violence. The eggs stained his clothing, and he later wore a cricket helmet during public appearances for protection.
Since then, more than a dozen TMC MLAs and leaders have reportedly faced similar protests.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to take measures to curb such incidents. The court asked the administration to submit a report outlining the number of arrests made and the actions taken against individuals accused of throwing eggs at political leaders.
The court’s observations came while hearing a petition filed by Abhishek Banerjee.
