Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the lathicharge on students during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, describing the police action as "un-Indian". Addressing reporters, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha criticised the Prime Minister for remaining silent on the incident and said, "People are being beaten, and it is completely un-Indian. Modi has not even apologised for what happened yesterday."
Earlier in the day, Gandhi, along with several Opposition MPs, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to seek a discussion in Parliament on the police crackdown. He alleged that Birla did not immediately agree to the request, saying he would first need approval from the central government.
"Just think about it. The Speaker is telling us that he needs the government's permission to hold a debate in Parliament. He is saying this openly," Gandhi told reporters.
