As AI reshapes the tech industry and triggers widespread layoffs, one role is seeing a surge in demand: the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE). Companies such as TCS, OpenAI and Anthropic are hiring FDEs to help businesses integrate AI into their operations.
WHAT DOES AN FDE DO?
A Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with clients to deploy and integrate AI tools into existing systems. The role combines software engineering, AI expertise and customer-facing problem-solving to build and implement tailored AI solutions.
Originally pioneered by Palantir, the role has gained renewed importance as businesses increasingly adopt AI technologies.
HOW TO BECOME AN FDE
There is no dedicated certification for becoming an FDE. Experts recommend building strong skills in programming, AI, cloud computing, data pipelines and frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex.
Equally important are communication skills, business understanding and hands-on experience through real-world projects, hackathons or open-source contributions.
Existing software engineers can also transition into the role by gaining AI deployment experience and customer-facing exposure.
SKILLS EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR
Leading AI companies typically seek candidates with software engineering experience, proficiency in languages such as Python or JavaScript, knowledge of AI frameworks and experience deploying production-grade systems. Understanding business requirements and working directly with clients are considered major advantages.
SALARY
FDEs are among the highest-paid AI professionals.
US: Base salaries range from $146,000 to $280,000 (around ₹1.4 crore to ₹2.7 crore), often with equity.
India: Salaries typically range from ₹11 lakh to ₹36 lakh per annum, with senior professionals earning ₹50-80 lakh or more.
Experts believe FDEs will remain highly valuable as companies continue adopting AI, although the role may eventually evolve as organisations build larger in-house AI teams.
